This year’s MasterChef UK has landed, and D&G’s very own Head of Customer Care, Johnny Banger is competing.

We caught up with Johnny to find out a little bit more about him, his life outside D&G, his career and what three people he would have over for dinner.

Hey Johnny, tell us a little bit about you?

Hey, I’m Johnny and I live in a little village called Tettenhall in Wolverhampton, with my wife, Jo and our 13-year-old son, Jago. As well as being a big foodie, I love spending time with family, and friends, watching sports and cycling.

What has your journey been like up until now?

I joined Domestic & General in November 2021, so I’ve not been with the business very long, but I’m enjoying every minute.

Before D&G, I led large operational teams across sales, service, retention, claims and complaint functions, so it feels like it's been a pretty smooth transition into the business.

What brought you to D&G?

Well D&G is an exciting business with some great growth plans. I had been with my old employer for many years, so I was looking for a new challenge with the opportunity to meet new people and be a part of helping the business grow.

What does a typical day look like for you (if that still exists)?

I generally spread my time across D&G's Nottingham and Bedworth offices. My role encompasses several different responsibilities, so I would say two days are never the same.

Day to day, I work with some great people, who all collectively work towards keeping our customers, clients and people happy in everything they do.

So, the news is out, you’re going to be appearing on MasterChef UK – how did that come about?

Yes! I had been wanting to apply for many years and I finally took the plunge last year. I was very fortunate to get picked ahead of thousands of people. It was a fantastic experience and something I won't forget.

Now you’ve appeared on TV, will we get to see you on anything else?

I’d like to get on a game show (maybe The Wall or Spin the Wheel with Michael McIntyre), that would be pretty cool.

If you could do anything else (regardless of skill or qualification), what would it be?

My dream job would be a pundit on Sky Sports. Getting paid to watch football is every football fan's dream!

Whilst you're cooking away, what is your go-to playlist/song?

I love all types of music but Friday night cooking to a backdrop of Radio 1 dance anthems is normally my first choice.

Lastly, (we thought this question was quite fitting) you can invite 3 people to a dinner party (dead or alive) who would they be and why?

  • Firstly, as a Liverpool fan, Jurgen Klopp (a German professional football manager and former player who is the manager of Premier League club Liverpool) would be one as he is such an amazing character and personality
  • Secondly, it would probably have to be Gordon Ramsay (British chef, restaurateur, television personality, and writer) for some brutal comments about my food
  • Lastly, Calvin Harris (Scottish DJ, record producer, singer, and songwriter) to supply the entertainment

Thank you, Johnny, we look forward to watching you on the show!
